Shannon’s Adventures: Pottery Painting

It’s been a long time since I’ve painted pottery and I’ve been wanting to go back and do it for a while… so my boyfriend and I went to Red Bank to Paint at A Time To Kiln.

I think it’s been 20 years since I’ve been there… which is a long time! I think the last time I went was for my friends 13th or 14th birthday party… and I’m 33 now. It’s pretty much the same too- I think they have a separate party room too- but there were a lot of different things to choose from. Some things were just decorative, some things were things you could use. I wanted like a trinket dish or a trinket box- so I saw a donut trinket box and I thought that was perfect. My boyfriend also got a little trinket box- he got an astronaut on the moon. Our pieces were both under $30. Mine was just $20 and it was a decent sized trinket box- I’ll show it before painting it at the end of my post here… but yeah they have tons of different options and it’s also $6 per painter per hour.

So the helper was super friendly and they give you a palette that you can choose 6 colors from. They have a lot of colors and they have regular finishes and speckled finishes. I used one speckled finish for the bread part of my donut and I think it’ll come out really well. And yeah- they say do three coats each of paint.

Also surprisingly there were a lot of different people there. There was a family with 2 little kids painting, there were some families with older kids and there were some other adults just painting. We went on Mother’s Day so I think it wasn’t the first thing people were doing in Red Bank on Mother’s Day but some people were.

We also just kind of enjoyed Red Bank for the day. Before we went to A Time To Kiln we went to Red Bank Diner which was really good. It was a small diner but it wasn’t too packed when we got there. We also stopped at some of our favorite places in Red Bank like Jay and Silent Bob’s Secret Stash and we went to Jack’s Music Shop. Jack’s has tons of new and used records and cds… but now they’re also bringing in huge amounts of used books. They used to carry sheet music, but now they’re just giving it away for free now so… I grabbed some for my junk journal and my boyfriend grabbed some too.

We bought the movie Obsessed with Idris Elba, Ali Larter and Beyoncé. I think this is a psychological thriller that was huge back in the day. My boyfriend also got a Cd from Vince Guaraldi- which we listened to on the way home and on our way to my grandma’s house and it was an amazing cd. We are huge peanuts fans so we loved it. We also got a Snoopy Jaw Harp which I thought was a harmonica for my mom. My mom was afraid to use it and chip her teeth… but my boyfriend and I were pretty amused by it- so he took it home.

We also stopped at Urban Outfitters because I like the little bag charms and trinkets they have and I really wanted to see the Bagu bags in person. I didn’t get a bagu bag… I do quite like the design but I’m not a shoulder bag girl- I’m a crossbody girl… and I think I could wear some of the adjustable bags- but I don’t know that they would be the comfiest bags for me. They didn’t have any bags besides the crescent bag either- and I would have liked to have seen the other bags.

I did buy the Bagu Backpack bag charm and I got a peach monchichi… and it was expensive and I probably shouldn’t have gotten them… but I wanted them and it was fine. The Bagu bags are $50 which is not a bad price at all for a handbag… but the bag charms are $20 which seems crazy.

Ohhh and my boyfriend and I also wore matching shirts… we both wore our shirts from the They Might Be Giants concert- I thought it would be a good painting shirt and he just put that shirt on for the day… we didn’t plan it but I didn’t change either. This amused people.

I didn’t take pictures of our finished products before it went in the kiln- and we won’t see what it looks like until after.

This is the Monchichi! She’s so cute! I was hoping she was a bag charm but she’s still cute!

And here’s the Bagu charm! I’m going to put it on my Labubu when I get him.
