I'm cheating so much with this one I am not even going to refer to it as a romance movie. There is really no romance in this movie... it is just 2 people kind of using one another to survive. This is in theaters now though and it is a great Date night movie to watch but also a good movie to watch if you're alone on Valentine's Day because it can show you that both Men and Women are trash and you really just have to look out for yourself to survive.
So this movie stars Rachel McAdams as Linda Lyttle, a woman who is overlooked for a promotion by Bradley (Dylan O'Brien) who is the new CEO of the company they work at and they both end up stranded on an Island after their private jet crashes and everyone else in the company on the jet dies... including the man that was being promoted ahead of Linda.
Linda we also know is a survivalist- she loves watching Survivor, she has an audition tape for Survivor and she has a million survival books in her house. So when she and her boss are stranded... she lets him know they aren't in the office anymore and she's the boss now.
This movie... has both characters as very flawed people who have a lot of issues. I guess we're supposed to be rooting for Linda most of the movie... but she does some things that are kind of unforgivable throughout the movie. I do admire how she does what she has to to survive the way that she wants to survive... but uhh... she does some very bad things.
The end of the movie... is fun. It kind of keeps you guessing I think and I wasn't really expecting the end but it was good. Everyone kind of got what they deserved... except some people didn't really deserve what they got. And that is the only way I will explain this without spoiling it.
There were times when it seemed like Bradley and Linda were going to get together for better or worse... and I won't really spoil if they do or not- but either way this isn't really a romance movie... it is a stretch for me to put it on this list... but there's a man, a woman and some romantic themes... and it does use some rom com tropes. Linda is very much an outcast and she is very quirky- like some girls in Rom Coms... that's kind of how she ends up alone and with no real friends in her company- but it also is what makes her a survivalist.
This is Sam Rami's first horror movie in years also and this was a really good return. That also means that there are some easter Eggs. Bruce Campbell does appear as Bradley's father- the now deceased CEO and if you're a Rachel McAdam's fan -you might recognize the song Linda is listening to at the beginning of the movie "Rip Her To Shreds" originally by Blondie which is what she listens to in this movie- but it was famously covered by a band called boomkat and featured in the Rachel McAdams hit film Mean Girls. Another frequent collaborator with Sam Rami did the soundtrack to this movie and that is... Danny Elfman. And it seems random that this January Horror/ Thriller movie had Danny Elfman as the composer... BUT it is a Sam Rami movie so that makes more sense. There were also some scenes that were reminiscent of Evil Dead which is Sam Rami's most well known horror project.
I would recommend checking this movie out... it is worth seeing- plus it's a good date movie for Valentine's Day if it is still playing then!
Bye!
