Oscar 2025- My Predictions and What I’ve seen so far

Alright the Oscar’s are on Sunday and I’ve seen most of the movies nominated for best picture… so I’m going to talk about them here. I’ve posted reviews on most of the movies on this blog somewhere and I will be posting a full review on Anora pretty soon because I just watched that one… but yeah.

Anora-

Okay this is the one that I just watched and this one is what I’m hoping wins. It’s been predicted lately that this one could win, this won for the Critics Choice Awards I think… this was such a great movie that I knew nothing about going in and watching it.

This is basically just a slice of life movie about a prostitute who meets a Russian Billionaire’s son and they go to Vegas and get married… but his family is upset by it and they want him to get it annulled immediately… and that’s pretty much what happens in this movie. It’s just an adventure movie of these people in the billionaire’s family trying to get him away from Anora… and it’s just really well done. It felt like we were watching 5 movies in one and it was just overall very fun. I really loved this movie. It was mostly hilarious and there were no real villains of the movie… but the very last scene was kind of the saddest of the movie overall.

There is a lot of sex and nudity at the beginning- I would honestly say you can skip to the middle if you don’t enjoy watching that… but overall this is a 5 star movie for me.

Wicked

This is another favorite of mine that I just watched again and I’m a huge fan of wicked the play… and this movie more than did it justice. It was the perfect casting, the small changes they made were perfect and I think Jon M Chu did a brilliant brilliant job with this. I love the practical sets and the cgi that they did with this looked really good too. Overall fantastic movie… I would be happy if this movie won as well.

Conclave

This was the one that when the previews first came out I was like “ohhh this one is definitely going to win” and then I watched the movie and I’m not quite sure I really feel that way now. A lot of people are comparing this to Mean Girls and it totally is. It’s like a dramatic Mean Girls type movie about the selection of the new pope. And all the actors in this do such a phenomenal job it’s a shame that I don’t think this will win any acting categories for the Oscar… but this is a good ensemble and deserves some recognition.

Dune Part 2

It’s been so long since I’ve seen this one but I really loved this one. It was one where I thought it was going to be a movie my boyfriend dragged me to see- but I ended up really enjoying it it was really fun to watch and I love the world of the Dune movies. I need to read the books. I think this has no chance of winning just because this is a sci fi movie and it was out so long ago… but it’s still a great movie.

The Substance

This is another favorite of mine. I could kind of see this winning best picture too but they never give horror movies best picture. Before yesterday this one was my favorite besides Wicked… but now I think I have to say I enjoyed Anora just a little bit better. This is still the best body horror movie of all time though. And the performances in this were amazing.

Emilia Perez

This one most people are just kind of skipping when they’re talking about the awards because this is not a good movie and now there is a lot of controversy because the actress that played Emilia Perez had some really disgusting tweets that resurfaced among all of this. I’m mostly mad at how many movies should have been nominated in this movies place. Nosferatu should have been nominated for best picture, Pamela Anderson should have been nominated for Best Actress, and Jon M Chu should have been nominated for best director. This also has 2 songs that were nominated for best original song and those were garbage. So… overall not happy about this movie being the most nominated movie of the year. It does not deserve the award at all… and it’s just a bad movie.

It does make me slightly interested in the winner of best international film… because there are 2 international films nominated for best picture and one for best documentary I believe. So if this movie wins over one of those movies- I feel like this has potential to win best picture… and we get another moment like when Crash won for best picture.

Anyway uhh yeah. Let’s get to my predictions. From what I’ve heard there are no front runners in any categories and how Best Picture is voted for is a little bit different.

Best Actress in A Leading Role

Cynthia Erivo- Wicked

Mikey Madison -Anora

Demi Moore- The Substance

Fernanda Torres- I’m Still Here

Karla Sofia Gascon- Emilia Perez

This one is tough. I’ve seen all but one of these movies- I haven’t seen I’m Still Here. As much as I loved Mikey Madison in Anora- I think Cynthia Erivo and Demi Moore gave stronger performances for their movies and I think it will likely go to Demi Moore. She deserves it for sure- I am hoping Wicked Part 2 is just as well received and Cynthia gets a chance for it next year.

Best Actor in a Leading Role

Adrian Brody- The Brutalist

Timothee Chalamet- A Complete Unknown

Ralph Fiennes- Conclave

Colman Domingo- Sing Sing

Sebastian Stan- The Apprentice

So for this one I’ve only seen one of the movies- so I’m really not sure about this one. As I mentioned before- I’d love to see someone win for Conclave because it deserves it for the performances it gave… I just don’t think Ralph Fiennes will win for this one.

I’m thinking it could be Timothee Chalamet. I’ve heard really good things about him in A Complete Unknown and I would love to see him win too. I’ve also heard people say it could be Adrian Brody… which would make sense- a lot of people think The Brutalist could win best picture. I think Timothee won one of the other awards for best actor- not sure which award it was but… I think he could do it and I kind of hope he does!

Actress in a supporting Role

Monica Barbara- A Complete Unknown

Ariana Grande- Wicked

Isabella Rossellini- Conclave

Zoe Saldana- Emilia Perez

Felicity Jones- The Brutalist

People are saying it could be Ariana Grande and I hope she wins. I would also love to see Isabella Rossellini win for conclave- but I don’t think she was in the movie enough for that. I haven’t seen the Brutalist or A Complete Unknown so maybe I’m just biased… but I think it could be Ariana Grande.

Actor in a Supporting Role

Kieran Culkin- A Real Pain

Edward Norton- A Complete Unknown

Yura Borisov- Anora

Guy Pearce- The Brutalist

Jeremy Strong- The Apprentice

I’d be shocked if it wasn’t Kieran Culkin because he took home every other award this season. I would love to see Yura Borisov win for Anora because that’s the only movie I’ve seen on here… but it’s going to be Kieran Culkin and I’m happy for him. I just hope he doesn’t drink too much Pepsi!

Best Picture

Dune Part 2

A Complete Unknown

The Brutalist

Anora

Conclave

Wicked

Nickel Boys

The Substance

I’m Still Here

Emilia Perez

So the winner for best picture is chosen by a preferential ballot- this means that the academy lists their favorite movies from this list 1- 10. A film needs 50% of votes in order to win and if something doesn’t get 50% right away- the lowest ranked film will be eliminated and the members that voted for that will have their second pick taken as their choice.

So my local new’s entertainment reporter- Joelle Garguilio- believes this could work in The Brutalist’s favor.

I am happy that this years nominees include so many movies about women- and even the ones that aren’t have very strong female characters and representation. I would love to see Anora win this because I feel like that movie deals a lot with the objectification of women and it is a very slice of life movie centered around a woman. I would love to see that or The Substance of Wicked win because last year it seemed like the academy was not taking women seriously and this year if one of those movies won- it definitely shows a step in the right direction.

So those are my predictions and long worded thoughts on everything. Stay tuned for an Anora review eventually… and yeah!

Bye!

-Shannon
