Movie Monday: Wolfman- the worst Wolf Man movie?

Okay- so after the first trailer of this movie my boyfriend and I were excited. We like wolf man movies, we like the director… it seemed like a good adventure.

Then my cousins pointed out that the second trailer looked bad… which was true and the wife of the movie looked like she could be his daughter… and that realization kind of took my boyfriend and I out of it. It just looked a bit too weird… but it’s still a wolfman movie and it’s January- there aren’t many options… so we saw it.

I think the first part of the movie was really good. It seemed like it was going to have themes of the struggles of parenthood and the dangers of the wilderness… that’s fine. Then we have the family going to the wilderness and it’s like a really spooky 3 person horror movie in a scary setting… and that’s great… but then it gets a little bit too messy too fast.

So one thing I think could have saved this movie was if they gave us some rules about being a wolf man… because we don’t really know how they turn into the wolf man… it seems like they aren’t really the hairy wolf men that are on all 4s like we’re used to… they’re just kind of human animals- that are a little more like zombies than wolf man. It does kind of establish this with a quote in the beginning… but again because there’s no rules about being a wolf man… they seem like they’re almost too strong and everyone in this part of Oregon has become a wolf man… but also we see the characters in the movie kill the wolf men immediately… so by the end of the movie… the woods shouldn’t really be that dangerous. They kind of just instantly kill the monsters and… it could be better.

They also make some really bad decisions that just kind of… don’t add suspense to the movie at all. Like they put an empty very light bookshelf in front of the door- the dad bolts the bookshelf to the door but it doesn’t help them at all. They climb on top of a greenhouse tent instead of going back in the house. They’re also just on the lower level of the house the whole movie… why not just go upstairs???

The sound in the movie also makes it seem like more is going on than there is… and it just doesn’t really go back to being good. And at the bottom I’m going to rank what I judge a movie on and maybe I’ll talk about it a bit.

So yeah. The movie started out with the spooky atmosphere but it kind of fell flat overall with that, the cast was okay but they couldn’t carry this movie, it looked pretty great actually but the wolf men looked pretty bad. The press is my secret category that covers trailers, interviews and marketing/ merchandise for the movie… this gets a 2 cause the trailers couldn’t really even make this look good. The music was really suspenseful at the wrong parts… which is bad and the character development and writing was awful.

And for my personal enjoyment rating…

Overall… if you want to see this movie it’s still okay and I wouldn’t say to avoid it completely- it was still pretty entertaining but overall… it’s just not that great. There are some way better horror movies and action movies from the way the trailers before the movie looked- so overall… this will probably be a pretty forgotten about movie overall.
