Movie Monday: What I Watched This Weekend! The Last Showgirl + more!

Okay this weekend I’ve watched a lot of movies and… they weren’t all good but let’s talk about them!

The Last Showgirl

⭐️⭐️⭐️ out of ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Okay this has been getting a lot of buzz because of Pamela Anderson’s performance and she did an amazing job. I’m really happy that she seems to be getting such great roles now because she’s very talented and she just looked so gorgeous in the role.

This movie is about a show called The Razzle Dazzle that’s been running for years and Pamela Anderson’s character Shelly has been working there since the start. She’s even the face on the poster. The show hasn’t changed at all in the 40ish years it’s been on and Las Vegas Showgirl shows aren’t really what they used to be so it’s not bringing in the crowd that it used to… and it gets cancelled.

I absolutely loved the cast and the performances in this movie! They had Kiernan Shipka and Brenda Song as young showgirls- and you really get the dynamic between the different generations of showgirls in the show and how they’re dealing with the shows cancellation. They also have Jamie Lee Curtis as a former dancer that quit to become a cocktail waitress who is facing similar problems. Billie Lourde is in it and I don’t want to spoil her role too much- but she brings a lot of heart to the movie and although she doesn’t play a showgirl I’m pretty sure she posted a picture with her grandma Debbie Reynolds as a showgirl. And they also have Dave Bautista- who is the guy that runs the show and even though he’s kind of sleazy at a lot of parts- you can still tell he really cares about the girls. All of them did really well in the movie- I didn’t think Billie Lourde did the best performance but… I really think her character brought a lot to the movie and I’m glad that she got that role.

There were times of the movie where you don’t really feel sympathy for the main character. She did give up a lot for the show and it’s closing now… but the show wasn’t really worth what she gave up. And at times she treats the other showgirls like crap and she acts like she doesn’t really need them. In the end I think she sees that the show is her family and I feel like she’ll try to be there for the people in her life a little more without the show.

It also felt like they cut a scene or two and… the movie just felt kind of rushed at parts. There were a lot of scenes of the characters walking that were just to make you feel… and it is interesting to see Vegas in the daytime but it wasn’t 100% for me.

Overall I gave the movie 3 stars- it’s not a forgettable movie by any means these characters stick with you but it’s not the best overall. And my number grade:

Wallace and Gromit: Vengence Most Foul

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ out of ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I’m a big Wallace and Gromit fan- especially the Three amazing adventures and this movie follows a villain from the Three Amazing Adventures: Feathers McGraw! A penguin diamond theif who is a a Bad Egg. He’s been put to prison at the zoo’s penguin exhibit and he escapes and re-wires Wallace’s new invention the Norbot to be evil. I loved this one I felt like a kid watching it- I loved the Norbots- which were garden gnome robots and the fact that Feathers just hacked into these sweet little Garden Gnomes and made them evil was really funny to me. If I had one complaint it’s that Wallace isn’t in the movie enough but overall… it’s Wallace and Gromit. I loved it! It gets a perfect 30 for the score and 4

Woman of The Hour

⭐️⭐️⭐️ out of ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Alright this one was a pleasant surprise. I think I need to re-watch this one and maybe I’ll update my review on it because I did not like the first half of the story before they get to the Dating Game but by the second half I was kind of hooked and I thought they did a really good job. This is a fictionalized account of the Dating Game Killer- Rodney Alcala. The parts of the movie that the director and star Anna Kendrick used poetic license with were to highlight the main theme of this movie which is sexism and how women weren’t being taken seriously and I think she did a really great job with that. By the end of the movie it doesn’t feel like they’re hitting you over the head with this message it just feels like yeah this is the way the world is.

The movie could have maybe delved more into the complex intersectionality of sexism- the movie does have mostly white women in the cast and they don’t really go there with the one woman of color in the movie… but that and the kind of slow start to the movie are the only things I can really knock the movie down for. I think Anna Kendrick did a great job telling this story and I’m sure she’ll direct more great movies from here. I also 100% think this movie should be taken more seriously and I will talk about that a little bit when I get to the next movie!

Emilia Perez

No Stars

I have no idea why this movie is being taken seriously by award season or why anybody likes it. This is a Musical about a cartel leader in Mexico that kidnaps a lawyer to help the cartel leader transition into being a woman. The director of the movie is a cis French man and this is a movie about a Trans Mexican woman. The music in this is also total crap- they don’t sound like they’re singing in the movie you just know it’s a musical number because they have the music notes in the subtitles. There is also only one Mexican person in this whole movie… I think maybe the whole production… I could be wrong about that and… I don’t know.

I’m disgusted with the fact that this movie keeps getting nominated and winning awards because there are so many better movies out there that aren’t getting taken seriously. I would say Woman of the Hour, Nightbitch and Wicked should be taken way more seriously than this movie and this movie is kind of just eating the awards season away. And it’s absolutely awful. I think this shows that men in Hollywood are being taken way more seriously than women and that representation is important. I am not a fluent Spanish speaker… but I don’t think the Spanish in this movie was translated that well on screen. I could be completely wrong about that- but there was one curse word they kept using and it was translated as like 5 different words… and I don’t think that’s correct.

If there’s anything positive I can say about the movie it’s that it did look really good- and I didn’t think the acting was bad at all. I thought the actress playing Emilia Perez did a great job.
