Movie Monday: Novacaine, Princess Mononoke+ Death Of A Unicorn

So things in my life have been a little crazy lately… with my house being renovated I haven’t really had my normal dates with my boyfriend where we just kind of hang out and watch movies at my house. But we have been going out to see movies and we’ve seen a lot this week.

Novocaine

This is the best marketed movie of the year for sure- but I feel like it was supposed to be marketed totally differently. The plot of the movie involves Christmas- but it’s not a Christmas movie at all and wasn’t marketed that way… but they could have and they could in the future I guess if this gets rereleased.

Anyway this is an action comedy that is also kind of a rom com. The main character is really likable and funny and you really see him get beat up in the movie.

Overall- if you liked the trailer for this you’ll probably like the movie. There weren’t many surprises- I was a little surprised at the sort of “twist” in the movie but it wasn’t really that special. Overall I liked it- I would watch more if they make more.

Princess Mononoke

So my boyfriend is a big studio Ghibli fan and I have not seen many of their movies… BUT I appreciate all of them- but I prefer the lighter ones to the more serious ones… and this one was really serious.

And I was in kind of a weird mood when I was seeing it- I had a lot on my mind and the Ghibli rereleases I believe are usually in Japanese and I didn’t see 100% of the subtitles… but I still thought the movie was beautiful I loved the animation, I loved the music and as great as the Ghibli dubs are… I do kind of prefer seeing the movies in the original Japanese.

So yeah I think I still need to see this movie again to appreciate it fully… but I did like seeing it in the 4K imax and I would see it again- either in imax or any other format.

Death of a Unicorn

This one was one I had kind of wanted to see- usually A24 movies aren’t out for that long at my theaters- so I was glad we actually could see this in theaters. And it was a good one to see in theaters too- it was pretty much Jurassic Park but with Unicorns. The cgi was pretty good and the action was really good. This might have actually been my favorite movie of the bunch… as much as I liked Novocaine I was a little more disappointed in that… and death of a unicorn I thought was just good overall. Of all the movies I’ve seen recently, Black Bag is still my favorite I think. I have a full review on that alone. We haven’t been really choosing movies based on what we want to see the most- we’ve kind of just been doing whatever and then seeing if a show time works for us…and that’s been really fun because we don’t really know what to expect or what we’re seeing for the night. Plus it gets us to see movies that maybe weren’t our first pick. Other than Princess Mononoke- which my boyfriend wanted to see and Novocaine which we both kind of wanted to see… we’ve been surprised!

And that’s everything!

Bye!
