Movie Monday: Nosferatu Review

Okay… this one is a movie that’s not for everyone I don’t think… but I did really enjoy it and as a Dracula fan who has taken a course in Dracula history… this was a great Dracula movie.

So overall I really enjoyed this movie- I highly recommend it. There were parts of the movie that I thought “huh this isn’t as great as a lot of people are saying it is” but overall I think it is really great and if you like horror, Dracula, or Robert Eggers… I would 100% check it out. I gave it four and a half stars… which I think is fair- but I think for a lot of people this could be a five star movie. I think it’s one a lot of people will love. Now I’m going to break down this movie down by what I grade it off of… and talk about what I really liked about everything.

Gives the feels for the Genre- 5

This is a perfect Gothic horror movie period piece and it takes place around Christmas so it’s definitely good to watch around then too or in the winter. I could see myself watching this movie every winter because I liked it that much. Very gothic and spooky atmosphere and it’s perfect for a vampire movie.

Cast - 5

I also thought the cast did a really great job. It was kind of an ensemble cast so there wasn’t really one main character- however… a lot of the cast totally stole the show. Lilly Rose Depp had some fantastic scenes, the audience I saw it with went crazy any time Willem Dafoe was on screen, Nicolas Hoult is incredibly talented and he did an amazing job, and Bill Skarsgard was perfect. Even the supporting roles like Aaron Taylor Johnson and Emma Corrin were great. Loved it.

How Did it Look- 5

Another perfect score for this one. The spooky atmosphere was perfect… the costumes were great. It looked amazing.

Press- 5

This is my secret bonus category- but there was a lot that got me pretty hyped for this movie before seeing it. We didn’t see Nosferatu in the trailer which was great- they had critics screen it early and they all raved about it, they had social media stars do press and interviews for it… it was great and I loved it.

Music- 5

I don’t know that I even really noticed the music… but in the scary scenes it made everything way scarier and it was perfect.

Character Development- 4 and 3/4

Okay this is nearly perfect I just kind of would have liked a little more backstory on a lot of our characters. We get enough but we don’t really understand the connection between Ellen and a lot of the characters. I would have liked maybe a flashback with a younger version of her with Anna and maybe something happens that shows Ellen’s connection with Nosferatu and it could also maybe explain why Frederich disliked her. Also as much as I loved Willem Dafoe’s character he is completely ridiculous, he comes out of no where and he steals the movie. He’s great in it- but it felt like he just wandered onto the set. I kind of wonder if Robert Eggers wrote the character just for him specifically and if Dafoe couldn’t be in it if the character could just get scrapped. The character almost acts as a narrator and a bit of comic relief in the heavy movie… but I’m not sure he’s needed especially that late into the movie.

So those are my thoughts on Nosferatu. I don’t think I liked it as much as a lot of people… but I still did really like it and I will definitely watch it again.

Bye!
