Movie Monday: I Hate Valentine’s Day

Okay so... I like this movie because it stars Nia Vardalos and John Corbett and it was directed by Nia Vardalos. The two of them have great chemistry and overall- this is an enjoyable movie and a fun one to watch. I would watch it again.

That being said though- I thought "wow this is a really cute movie" the first time I watched it and the second time I thought "I don't get how they don't just communicate their problems and say they like each other and get together." It seems really really easy... but they just don't.

So this movie follows a florist named Genevieve- played by Nia Vardalos. And Genevieve doesn't believe in relationships. She thinks you should date someone for five dates and then just say goodbye with no hard feelings. No heartbreak- just the beautiful moments of a new relationship.

John Corbett plays Greg- who opens up a Tappas bar on the same street as the flower shop... and the two start dating and follow the five date rule... but Genevieve slept over the fourth date and Greg says "that was 5 dates, we're over." And Genevieve is upset because she wants one more date.

These two both clearly like each other and they went on some very cute dates through the movie... and they could just say "let's forget the five date thing and see if we can make it work" but they don't and it just feels... bizarre. I feel like real adults don't behave that way... ever.

I think the movie was trying to flip the typical "the guy doesn't want a relationship" trope and have it about the woman not wanting a relationship... but it just seems like the main couple in the movie just needs to grow up a little.

So I've kind of changed my mind about this movie. If you like My Big Fat Greek Wedding- I'd still recommend watching this one if you can find it... but I don't think this is a movie anyone will like... and I think out of all the Nia Vardalos movies- this one is the bottom of my list. I still didn't dislike it- but it was more frustrating than the other movies.

Bye!
