25 Days of Romance Movies: Ever After (1998)

Alright- one movie that I know I've seen several times as a child but I don't think I've ever actually sat down and watched the whole thing in one sitting: Ever After with Drew Barrymore as Cinderella. This isn't really like any other Cinderella movies- including the one I just watched. This one is more focused on the aspect of it as a Period Drama than the ball or her dress or anything like that... which makes it seem less like a Cinderella story and more just like a period drama. It was an odd juxtaposition to watch this after the Brandi Cinderella because they are the same story- but they could not be more different.
And both of these are good stories- this one is a little bit long... but it isn't really boring at all. Even when I was a kid it held my interest for pretty long... which I think is interesting for a period movie. This and another movie about Fairies that I think was called FairyTale: A True Story from 1997 were 2 period movies I remember watching quite a lot... and this one I remember better. Partially because I actually knew who Drew Barrymore was at the time and I did know the story of Cinderella.
This doesn't really become a Cinderella movie until the end- aside from Barrymore's character living with her Stepmother and Stepsisters and she's sort of a servant. Her mother was a countess, but her mother passed away and her father married her stepmother and then died- so I guess that's how the stepmother is royal- but she isn't even though I don't exactly think that's how it works.
I also liked the romance of this movie until the ballroom scene ironically enough. You could really see them falling in love and you could see her making him a better person and the prince's parents even kind of noticed it. In the ballroom scene he finds out that she's common and he's like "I can't love you. you're a peasant and you lied to me." But then he finds her and confesses his love... and it's kind of sweet.
So yeah- that is everything. I hope you guys like this review! This movie is long but I think it's worth checking out. It isn't the best Cinderella movie or the best movie on this list- but I enjoyed watching this again.
