Movie Monday: Despicable Me 4 Review

So over the weekend I watched one of my favorite movie series to watch: Despicable Me. I saw it in theaters with my boyfriend and my parents… and as much as I love Despicable Me and the Minions… and I’ll probably always go to the theaters to see these movies… they have gone down in quality a lot. This one I think I still liked better than the Minions movies… it might be like tied with Rise of Gru because Rise of Gru was pretty good… but overall this wasn’t offensively bad or anything- it just isn’t the best animated movie ever.

So in this movie Gru and Lucy are in Witness Protection because Gru arrested someone during his high school reunion and he broke out of jail and wanted to capture Gru and his newborn son- Gru Jr. Gru Jr… kind of was the minion of this movie. Even though there were already minions in the movie… Gru Jr was just a cute character that didn’t have a lot else going for him. He was fine, it’s Gru’s baby… but the movie had a lot of kind of unnecessary characters.

My main issue with the movie was that for most of the movie- Gru is stealing a honey badger with the neighbor girl… and as fun as those scenes were… I don’t understand why they needed this neighbor character for this when Gru has 3 daughters we already know that he could have stolen the honey badger with… they just kind of wasted some time with the new character… I think the real heart of the movie is when Gru and Lucy are with the girls… and this movie was the one where that was really really lacking.

I also loved Will Ferrell’s voice acting in this movie but he might be my least favorite villain of the franchise so far. They didn’t give him a lot to do… his cockroach man thing was a little boring… he also had a girlfriend and a Maltese and I wish they were in the movie more too. Sofia Vegara was the voice of the girlfriend and she did a great job- but she wasn’t in it enough really.

The Mega Minions were the best part of the movie… I wish they were in the movie a little more. They were funny and that was a good parody. I also really like Ramsbottom and I’m glad he’s still in the movies. The minions weren’t in the movie that much either… so I don’t know that I can even strongly recommend this if you love The Minions. I think this was the least funny of all the movies too… they had a lot of really REALLY dated jokes and internet references. There was a Honey Badger don’t care joke… when was the last time you heard one of those???

So overall this was fine… I’ll still probably watch Despicable Me movies and minions movies in theaters but… I could see this movie being the turning point in the franchise where it’s like “maybe I don’t need to see all of these.”

So that’s everything! I hope you guys like this!

Bye!
