Another 2025 horror movie and this one... is probably the worst one so far. It isn't entirely bad- it is a pretty good concept... the ending of this movie ruined it for me and its one of my lowest rated movies of the year so far because of this. I am going to spoil the interpretation of the end of this movie- so a spoiler warning and I'm going to give a trigger warning for this movie too. If you're struggling and need help please reach out and get help.
I like this concept a lot. It is a daytime horror movie, which I love and the characters and story leading up to the woman in the yard appearing is very interesting. It's about grief and this family struggling because of the loss of a family member and how it affects them. The family had just gotten a fixer upper type house and they were trying to make it into a dream house before they lost the children's father... and it's very sad and you really feel for the family. And then this woman just shows up in the yard and it creeps the family out.
I'm going to admit... it's been a little bit since I've seen this movie and the middle of the movie and the actual horror elements and the Woman in the Yard herself aren't really that memorable. It is a little hard to watch because the family isn't nice to each other and The Woman in the Yard isn't really that scary, and they could have made her a little bit more scary. So even if the ending were different... I don't necessarily think this would have been the best movie... but it would have been something I could recommend. It is an original horror movie that centers around a woman of color... and as a woman I could connect with what the movie was trying to do. I saw this movie while I was kind of going through something kind of scary and sad... it is a relatable movie.
The ending of this movie... it's a little bit fuzzy to me... again I'm sorry this isn't something I was really planning on reviewing and I'm not going to watch it a second time... but the mother of the story ends up going with the woman in the yard I think in order to protect her kids and the interpretation of that is that she ends her own life thinking it will be better for her kids... and I told my boyfriend "No, that can't be what happens" and he said "No, I don't really see how it can't be that." So I'm not sure if this is an interpretation of the ending or if this is the actual ending and I just refuse to accept it... it is left somewhat abstractly. Either way- I think the fact that this is what people are getting from this movie is awful. The ending also kind of felt out of nowhere- like they just needed an ending so they just ended the movie in the worst way possible. I don't like it.
Anyway this movie is rated PG-13 and right now is available on Peacock as of the time I'm writing this. It's also availble to own on DVD, Blu Ray and digital. This was directed by Jaume Collet Serra.
Bye!
