So, I'm a huge horror fan and I've been watching a lot of horror movies, thriller movies and just general Halloween movies and I wanted to post a review for a different spooky movie every day in October. I have a few that were recently in theaters and a few I watched on streaming or on DVD. This one I watched on Disney Plus and while I wasn't excited to see this in theaters- I ended up really loving it!
This is a supernatural horror movie based on a Stephen King short story about a creepy wind up monkey toy that chooses someone to die in a freak accident. It sounds very silly... and the movie is. It never really takes itself too seriously- but in my opinion having comedy in horror movies really makes movies scarier... this is no exception! Even though it was funny it had a really great story behind it with great character development and the kill scenes were really really great.
The story starts with two young twin brothers who do not get along at all receiving the monkey from their father who is not in their life at all. They wind up the monkey and someone dies suddenly after. It happens a second time and one of the twins realizes that it seems like the monkey is the common link between the deaths. After a while- the boys bury the Monkey and they discover it again later on in life- when one of the twins is trying to bond with his son that he doesn't often see.
This movie also has a lot of twins and they have the actors playing the twins in dual roles... I really liked watching this and actually it makes me want to rewatch this movie because of the twin acting- because even some minor characters in the movie were dual roles and I thought that was really interesting.
So while I'm watching all of these horror movies- I am also trying to see as many movies that come out in 2025 as I can... and this could have been a top contender any other year for horror movies... but I already have 2 horror movies in my top 5... and there have been a lot of other good ones. Either way this is definitely worth watching- I would even say this movie is worth owning- I collect physical media so I'm considering buying this one sometime... somewhat waiting for a sale on it and deciding if I'd prefer the blu ray or the 4K version... but either way this is a very re- watchable movie!
As I mentioned before- this is available on Disney Plus and Hulu- it is Rated R and directed by Osgood Perkins. If you don't have those streaming services or want to own the movies- it is available on Blu Ray, DVD, 4K and digital.
Bye!
-Shannon
