31 Days of Spooky Movies: The Craft (1996)

So I've done a lot of movies that I've streamed for these blog posts... and then I realized- I have a lot of horror dvds and blu rays that I haven't watched yet... and one that I've really been wanting to see for a while now is The Craft- which I got on sale at target in 2020 or so... It's been a while.
Also just kind of something to note: I ordered this from target just a few years ago- but this must have been an older blu ray because it has an older style menu and a lot of elements that older blu rays and dvds have... I didn't check if it had easter eggs- it might... but the blu ray itself was really cool. It's hard to find a blu ray of this quality anymore.
I think overall I did like this movie- it is one I'd like again- but I kind of wish there was a little bit more to the movie than there was. It was mostly a high school movie with some witchy stuff... and the main character and the main villain character were good... but the other characters just kind of exist. They have good stories but they don't really develop the stories that well. Rochelle is being bullied by Christine Taylor who is also on the swim team with her and she's very racist and really mean. Bonnie- played by Neve Campbell has lots of burn marks all over her body and she's a little bit self conscious about it. Nancy- who ends up being the main villain of the movie- has a bad living situation and her mom and step dad don't have a lot of money. The main character is Sarah who is new to the school and she's also troubled because she tried to end her life and she moved to a different part of California because of that. Anyway the three other girls are already in a coven and when they see Sarah- she's kind of using magic and they realize "Hey we need to get this girl in our coven so we have North, South, East and West." And they show their stories a little bit- but they don't really develop the characters other than Sarah and because they don't set Nancy up enough in the beginning... it's a little bit alarming that she just becomes the villain.
And the stories they start setting up are really interesting too. I would have liked to see more about Rochelle's bullying story because Christine Tyler was really good in it and it seemed like she was getting closer to Sarah. And then at the end- the girls just kind of follow Nancy for no real reason and then they just sort of drop the coven and their friendship with Sarah... it's kind of abrupt... and I liked these characters enough that I would have liked to see them a little bit more.
Overall I did enjoy this movie- it isn't the best movie ever... but it is one that I will continue to watch around Halloween. My boyfriend seemed to really like it too- which I was kind of surprised by that... but we both tend to like witchy movies and I liked this being a high school movie about girls... It wasn't unlike my own high school really.
The Craft is streaming on Amazon and Pluto TV. This movie is rated R and directed by Andrew Fleming. It is also available for purchase on DVD, Blu Ray, Digital and 4k. It is from 1996- so I'm sure you can hunt for a VHS copy of this as well.
Bye!
