31 Days of Spooky Movies: Terrifier (2016)

I don't think Terrifier is the scariest movie I've ever seen- but it is the scariest movie I've ever watched alone... and I'm pretty sure I'm going to watch it again just so I don't need to see the other movies alone.

So the main appeal of Terrifier is Art The Clown who is the villain of the movie. Art the Clown is a silent clown who does silly things because he is a clown... but he is also a serial killer and we don't really know why he is the way that he is... BUT he is a serial killer, he doesn't even scream when he gets hurt during the movie and at the very end of the movie- spoilers- we learn that he cannot die. So totally silent killer that can't die and also looks like a very creepy clown... that's a scary movie.

So I didn't think I would like this movie at all because there's a lot of discussion about it... and now after seeing it- I think both sides are wrong. There's a horror reviewer I watch on Tiktok that mentioned that half the fans think this movie is awful and if you like it you're terrible and half love this movie, they think it's everything and you're terrible if you don't like it... and both groups of fans are totally insufferable. So... when I finally decided I was going to watch this- I wanted to put all "deeper meanings" aside and just watch this as a regular slasher movie... and with that in mind- I was totally able to enjoy it. Maybe it does have a deeper meaning, maybe it has no meaning... honestly I don't think this is that deep... it's the most "this is just a movie" movie I've ever seen... and I liked that.

I think people think the movie is sexist- which I guess it kind of is because Art targets women but... he kind of doesn't really target anyone per se. He does kill women in some gruesome ways... but that's kind of what he does with everyone... so I don't think you can really call it sexist for that. The female characters in this might not be portrayed as like the best representation of women of all time... but I don't think it's really stereotyping women or making them look bad... it's just kind of that they're trapped in a hard situation.

I also just kind of liked all the characters in this movie. I kind of wanted this to be a more chaotic slasher movie than it was and it was a little chaotic but... not really. It was a good amount of chaotic but it wasn't the most. I am excited to see what happens in the sequel based off the beginning and the end of this movie... but I don't think I'll watch it alone. In fact - I'll probably watch this one again just so my boyfriend can watch the sequel with me.

The thing that really scared me about Art the Clown was that he was totally silent. That's just plain scary to me!

Anyway this movie and Terrifier 2 are available to stream on Amazon Prime. It is rated R and it is directed by Damien Leon. This is also available to stream on Peacock, Plex, Pluto, Tubi and Roku. So I probably will watch all 3 movies if the 3rd is on one of those for free. You could also own this on digital, 4K, Blu Ray or DVD.

Bye!
