Suspiria is a movie I've seen clips of in Film Class before- but I've never actually seen the movie, or the remake which I have also heard is good... but after studying this movie and having actually seen the whole movie... I don't really understand why they remade it other than for cash. This movie holds up- its very stylish, suspenseful and I don't think they really needed to make a version of this with updated effects. I'm not usually against remakes- maybe I'm just biased because I like this movie and I did study it in film class. I'm not sure.
Anyway, this is a witchy movie about a girl that moves to Germany for a dance school and she sees someone running away for something and then she finds out that person died and more strange things happen to her at the school. The characters we meet at the academy are very odd and a little bit creepy- and Susie, our main character gets very sick and they make her stay on the campus to look after her- and then even more weird stuff starts happening at the academy and... theres some culty witchy stuff going on. I can't really explain this movie too well without completely spoiling the movie... it is very suspenseful, spooky and visually appealing.
I don't have much else to say about this movie- it's a really good story and while it was criticized in 1977 for being too atmospheric and not having enough character development... but to me our main character was pretty well developed and the other characters didn't really need as much development. There was also some dubbing in the movie- which happened a lot in the 70s and since this was originally released in Italy by an Italian director- that makes sense.
Suspiria is rated R, I watched it on Kanopy, but it is also available on Plex, Roku, and Tubi... plus you can buy it on dvd, blu ray, 4k... you could probably even find it on VHS and its on digital. It is directed by Dartio Argento.
Bye!
