31 Days of Spooky Movies: Obsessed (2009)

Okay, this is a thriller and not really a horror movie... but I can't watch 31 straight days of horror movies so there will be a few thrillers and a few spooky movies thrown in here as well. This movie has a powerful cast with Idris Elba, Ali Larter and the one and only Beyonce. This is also pretty much the end of Beyonce's acting career- she's only been in movies where she sings since this movie was a flop.
Anyway the premise to this is kind of bonkers... I always thought Ali Larter was the neighbor that slept with Idris Elba while he was married to Beyonce, but it wasn't. Ali Larter worked with Idris Elba, she was obsessed with him and she drugged him and presumably did other stuff with him... so there are some triggering things in this movie and it was hard for me to watch. Overall the relationship between Idris Elba and Ali Larter is cringey because she's just throwing herself at him and he is not interested in her at all... and she just cannot understand that he has no interest in her.
I think as much as I loved Beyonce in this movie... they miscast her horribly. Ali larter is beautiful... but Beyonce is Beyonce and they're trying to make her look plain and she just does not. She's very very pretty. She also isn't in the movie that much- which is probably a good thing because then she didn't have to miss a tour or have an album come out late... but I think its important to have the third character in this type of a movie a little bit more than she was. I kind of think she should have been in it more than the villain of the movie.
The best part is the very iconic fight scene at the end of the movie where Ali Larter pretty much destroys this couples brand new house... and Beyonce just has to be safe through all of it. It was a really good scene but it wasn't until the very end of the movie... and it was just with Beyonce and Ali Larter and not with Idris Elba... which feels out of the blue because the two characters aren't alone together the whole movie and they really don't have many scenes together. So it just feels like all three of them should be in this scene... Idris Elba is the main character and this is the main scene... it just makes sense.
Overall, this isn't that great... if you've seen one of these thrillers with a crazy villain, you've seen them all... but sometimes you need these just okay movies. It is actually Mid- and not really in a bad way...it's just actually mid. Not the best, not the worst. Forgettable, but iconic in a way and you can just watch it and turn your brain off.
This movie isn't available on streaming as far as I know- I found it at Jack's Music Shop for $3. You can rent or buy it digitally or find a copy somewhere... but I wouldn't really recommend going out of your way for this one. Still watchable though! Directed by Steve Schill and rated PG-13.
Bye!
Shannon
