I wasn't sure whether to include this movie or not in my 31 Days of Spooky Movies post... it's not really much of a horror movie but... I guess since M3gan is kind of a horror icon at this point it wouldn't be fair not to review this movie this month since I did see it for the first time.
And I have to say... this was a little disappointing. The trailer did show that this wasn't really a horror movie as much as an action movie- so I knew what I was getting into while I was watching this... but it's just so disappointing to think about what this movie could have been and then see it as just an action movie. I also kind of wanted this to be the next big horror franchise but I'm not sure they'll make any more after this one. I've been watching the Chucky movies and the tv show lately... and I think they could make M3gan as iconic as Chucky- or even to do a mash up movie with the two of them. I kind of hope they make this movie back into a horror movie again and this one doesn't just kill the franchise... but I could see that happening because this one wasn't that good.
I didn't think this movie was that bad of an action movie. I did like to see the character growth of M3gan, that was interesting and if this does go back to being a horror movie or if they have more movies from this... I hope they still include that even though I'd rather have M3gan be the villain again, they do make her a good character in this one and I wouldn't want to lose that I guess.
I didn't think that this movie was that bad as an action movie... and I still liked the characters- I just liked them all better in the first movie. The new characters were pretty fun also- I'm a big fan of Flight of the Conchords so I get excited anytime I see Jemaine Clement in something- so I really liked his character. Christian was a little bit boring as a villain- but he wasn't that bad... and the other M3gan type character that she was fighting was interesting- but she seemed like she was supposed to be too dangerous and it seemed like she wasn't in the movie a whole lot. I enjoyed the movie- I paid pretty close attention to it and as I'm writing this... nothing sticks out to me at all. There's nothing really that memorable about it.
So my overall thoughts on this movie are... I enjoyed it but I don't really know that I think it's worth watching. I didn't hate it but its just not that good.
M3gan 2.0 is directed by Gerard Johnstone and rated PG-13. It is now availble for streaming on peacock and to rent digitally or own on digital, 4k, dvd, and blu ray.
