I honestly do not like possession movies that much. I'm scared of the idea of demon possession- but in movies I don't really think its that scary... so I wasn't sure if this would be a movie for me or not.. and it was not. I don't know if this movie is for a lot of people. I wasn't really bored while I was watching it- but I also don't think there's anything particularly memorable about it and I think you kind of need to know a bit about the cult the movie talks about to appreciate the movie.
I should also point out- I didn't want to see this movie in theater because of the use of AI artwork in this movie. It was released shortly after the Sag/ Aftra strike or possibly during it... so it seemed even worse that ai artwork was used with it. And it was just for some of the "We'll be right back" logos and the backround signs in the show. This is also embarrassing because this movie has like 2 minutes of production company logos at the beginning of the movie... so they could have found someone to make a logo for the few scenes. That really kind of took me out of the movie because it just didn't look good, it was very obvious and it didn't fit with the time the movie took place in.
The movie I think starts too much like a late night talk show- and then it kind of shifts in the second half of the movie. They have the segments that they film for the show and during commercial break they show a little bit extra behind the scenes... I'm not sure how I feel about the format because at the beginning it felt a little bit too formulaic of a late night talk show... but then at the end they didn't really use the fact that this was taking place on a talk show enough and it just felt very different.
I do like late night talk shows and the history behind a lot of them.. but this just didn't do it for me. The end of the movie was really exciting but it just felt like "okay we have to end this movie" which... I know I keep saying for all of these movies but it's kind of true. They just kind of wrap it up and this one was a little bit better than some of the other wrapped up movies I've mentioned... but it is a bit abrupt.
This movie was written and directed by Cameron and Colin Cairnes and is rated R. You can find it streaming on hulu, Disney Plus and AMC+. You can also own it on Dvd, Blu Ray, digital and 4K.
Bye!
