Alright- back to some movies that came out in 2025 for the next few days at least and today we have what I think might be the first Sports Horror Movie- Him produced by horror Icon Jordan Peele and starring Marlon Wayans and Tyriq Withers.
I went into this movie thinking it was mostly going to be a body horror movie about what your body goes through while playing football- but it is kind of more of a psychological horror now that I'm thinking about it- especially during the ending. There also are some supernatural elements at the end.
The very ending of this movie was similar to The Home- which I reviewed a few days ago and... I'm going to spoil both movies here- they both end as a slasher movie more or less. This movie kind of earned that ending for the main character- we already saw the main character as violent and there really weren't any other options for him- and the characters were really all evil and got what they deserved. The thing I kind of wish these movies would update us on: what happens to these characters after this happens... do they get caught- is it just blamed on something or someone else? It's just not my favorite ending- but I do think it worked in this instance.
The best part of this movie was the performances. Marlon Wayans did a fantastic job in this movie and there was no boring part when he was on screen. He really became that character and I would love to see him in more horror movies because of this one. Tyriq Withers was also really good- he's a less experienced actor and he could keep up with Marlon Wayans and he did a great job. I was really impressed overall.
So the plot of this movie is kind of what I think most reviewers aren't liking about it... personally I really enjoyed it while I was watching it. I thought it was a fun movie and I liked the twists. It wasn't the best movie ever made- but I was laughing and having a good time while watching it. Thinking about it a few weeks later- it probably wasn't as great as what I was expecting. I can see why people thought it was predictable- although I didn't really see the twists coming... so it wasn't predictable in that way more of in the "Oh this has been done before and its been done better" type of way. I don't know if it would be fun to watch a second time around- but I did honestly think it was a fun movie and I would say to go see it and not listen to the negative reviews.
Oh also if you like football- this is kind of worth seeing for that. I'm not a big fan of football- so I might not have noticed all the references- but I did see a character dressed like Joe Namath and I'm sure that was on purpose. My dad is a big New York Jet's fan so I do know a little bit about football.
So overall- not the best horror movie of the year... but possibly the best performances of the year. And not a bad horror movie all in all.
Him is directed by Justin Tipping and rated R. At this time it's probably out of movie theaters- but it is available to rent or own digitally as of October 7th. I'm writing this a little earlier than I'm posting this- so I am unsure if this released on DVD or Blu Ray yet- but there should be an upcoming release date- I would imagine in the next month or two. I'm also not sure if this is currently or will be streaming on any other service.
Bye!
