One of my favorite Youtube horror reviewers always talks about this movie and how it is a very beautiful atmospheric horror movie and it sounded really interesting to me. So I bought the blu ray or dvd a few years ago when Target had a sale... and I finally got around to watching it... and I really ended up loving it.
I was just watching this for fun with my boyfriend before I decided to do this 31 days of Spooky movies... and it was a month or so ago so I don't remember it all that well... but we both really liked it. This is a spooky retelling of the classic Grimm fairy tale that focuses on Gretel trying to take care of her younger brother and having sort of a coming of age story where we find out that Gretel is also a very powerful witch. The witch is sort of training Gretel but Gretel finds out that the witches powers are darker than just cooking them all the best food the two hungry children could ever dream of... and she has to defeat the witch.
This was a great movie that was both accurate to the story and a good twist on it I guess- but I will say that parts of the movie were a little bit slow and a little bit boring. It wasn't completely boring- but there were parts where it wasn't that interesting. There was never a part where I disliked the movie or thought it was too boring to watch. I would watch it again sometime this fall even. I kind of was watching the dvd so that I could eventually donate it- but I ended up liking the movie so much I don't think I will donate it.
I watched a review on this to refresh my memory on some parts- it was from Possessedbyhorror who is the reviewer that I heard about this movie from to begin with, but she mentioned that she didn't really like the ending of this movie- and I don't want to spoil this movie but she thought it was a little too much of an easy ending. I think she also mentioned that the ending felt a little bit different than the rest of the movie- and I can see that also. I think a lot of horror movies and even some horror books tend to end a little too early and they just kind of wrap things up without really solving everything... and it doesn't always fit the rest of the movie. The movie I reviewed yesterday had this problem- and I think a lot of other movies do too.
This movie is rated PG-13 and as of the time I'm writing this it is streaming on Amazon Prime! It is also available to purchase on Blu Ray, DVD, 4K and digitally. Honestly this movie looks amazing and would be a good 4K to own. This was directed by Osgood Perkins- who also directed The Monkey which I reviewed for my first Day of Spooky Movies.
Bye!
