Now to my most unique horror movie I've ever seen... Good Boy starring Indy- who is a real life Good Boy doggy. I didn't know a lot about this movie going into it- just that it was a horror movie from the point of view of a dog. I love horror movies and I love dogs- so there was pretty much no chance of me not enjoying this movie... and honestly- although I still enjoyed it... it isn't my favorite movie I've ever seen. I would say if you're not a pet person and you don't really care about film making or horror movies- this is a skippable movie for sure.
The worst part of this movie... and also probably the best was that there really is no plot to the movie. It's very much just a dog making faces at things. It's generally about a dog that's in a haunted house and the dog's owner is very sick... but I'm not quite sure the house is really haunted so much as dogs get scared of the unknown. There are other dogs that ran away and other people that got sick in the house- but we really don't learn to much about it. To me it just seemed like the dog was trying to cope with his owner being very sick and moving to an unknown area.
So while I think this might be the weakest part of the movie- it's also kind of a strong part of the movie because its kind of up to the audience member to decide what's really going on in the movie. I'm not sure I think anything supernatural was going on in the movie- I just think the dog was scared. I would have liked if this was a haunted house movie with the dog... but it didn't feel like that to me. It was still good and interesting but I think a plain haunted house movie would be good for this.
The movie kind of changed for me with the post credits scene about the way they filmed Good Boy and how the dog did not know it was in the movie at all. The director of the movie is also the actor that plays Todd in the movie and Indy is just his dog and they just got Indy to react to different things to look at the camera. It took them over 5 years to film... and I think this movie is really special because of that. I think he'll always have this movie and the memories of it to remember his dog and I love dogs so that's special to me. I also do have an interest in how films are made and especially horror films- this challenge really has me interested in horror movies and shows... so for me that totally made the movie.
This is also a really good movie if you're just starting to watch horror movies, or if horror movies can be too much for you. There are a few jump scares and scary moments in this movie- but in general it's pretty low key, low stakes and it's easy to watch. My niece is 8 and I don't really think she would be interested in this movie- I think it would be too slow for her... but she does like scary things and I don't think this would be too scary for her.
And before I end this I'm just going to mention the sister isn't seen in the movie and her name is Vera- I think this is a reference to Norm's wife Vera on cheers. I could be reaching there- none of the humans are seen in the movie... but I always try to pay attention when characters aren't shown in movies and shows because there's usually some reason behind it.
Good Boy is rated PG-13 and directed by Ben Leonberg. At the time I'm writing this the movie is in theaters- but I don't believe it will be by the time this is published. Definitely look for this on streaming in the near future- I would imagine it will be on Shudder- and sometimes Shudder movies end up on different services. Late Night With The Devil is one Shudder movie that I watched recently on Disney+- I think I've also seen that movie on diffetent services before that too.
Bye!
