I’ve heard Dead Silence is pretty good and I’ve been wanting to watch it for a while now. I saw it available to watch on Peacock and I thought that would be a good one for the challenge.
So this is a very mid 2000’s horror movie in the best sense. It’s very mysterious- the main character’s wife was killed in a mysterious way after he finds a package containing a creepy ventriloquist dummy.
He has to try to prove his innocence and find out the Dummy’s involvement by going back to the town he and his wife both grew up in. Donnie Wahlberg is the cop investigating the case and he does not believe our main character at all… and the mystery kind of unfolds from there.
I don’t want to give too much of this movie away because I really liked the vibe of this movie and I loved the way the mystery unfolded. It was a little slow and boring at times- but it did pick up quickly and… things got pretty interesting.
I also really liked the ending of this movie- I saw PossessedbyHorror recently mention that she misses when horror movies didn’t have a happy ending… and this one didn’t have a happy ending but the story was still resolved. I think I would rather see that happen than the end be “this is suddenly a slasher movie” so… it felt earned and it was a pretty good twist that made sense and there was some buildup for! The fact that it wasn’t revealed till the end of the movie made me know it wasn’t going to be a happy ending… but it made sense. It felt earned.
So overall I thought this was pretty good. It wasn’t the scariest- but it was scarier than something like The Home from this year… which I would definitely compare this movie too. Similar vibes- similar scare level… but a better plot and better substance I guess.
Dead Silence is rated R and directed by James Wan. You can find it streaming on Peacock or you could own it on Blu Ray, dvd, it was released on HD DVD back in 2007 too. It was also recently released in 4K from the scream factory… and I believe you can rent it own it digitally.
Bye!
