Okay- the moment I've probably been most excited for that kind of inspired the 31 days of spooky movies: Weapons. I'm a little late on my review here... but this movie is definitely one of the best movies of the year and was definitely the hit of the summer for a reason... it is amazing and a very unsettling horror story told in a very unique way.
So this movie is about a class that just disappears one day. Only one kid and the teacher are left and we get to see this story told from everyone's perspectives. The movie is narrated by one of the little girls in the town- possibly a girl from the class- but its never specifically mentioned- she only narrates the beginning and the end of the movie really. The story is told by small segments from different characters points of views. The teacher, one of the parents, the principal, the cop, a criminal from the town, and the student... This makes the pacing of the movie really interesting because we see certain characters in some scenes- but then we don't really see what happens with them right away. I don't want to give too much of this movie away even though it's been out for a while and spoilers are out there... I didn't go into the movie completely blind- I watched the trailer, I saw the image of Benedict Wong and I had known there was a prequel in the works about a character named Aunt Gladys. With this info... you can kind of piece together the story of the movie... but its still very surprising, very funny and very scary. This might actually be one of the scariest movies I've ever seen... and its also very sad and really funny... this is just a really really good movie.
I also really loved the cast of this movie- I think everyone did a perfect job in this. I know Pedro Paschal was cast originally as Josh Brolin's character and while I love Pedro Paschal- I cannot picture him in this role and I think Josh Brolin did a great job. This is also a movie I wanted to see like right away after I saw it the first time. I haven't yet watched it a second time- I don't think I will in theaters... but this is worth watching again and again and I loved it.
Any other year this would probably have been my favorite horror movie... but I LOVED the movie sinners so much and there are a few other movies I think I may have enjoyed more than this one.. so that is everything!
I'm writing this post a month before I plan on posting it- I believe this movie has been released digitally at this time and I think that soon it will be streaming on HBO Max- making the perfect double feature of this and Sinners. This was directed by Zach Cregger and is rated R... and aside from the digital release and HBO Max release- it will be on Blu Ray, DVD and 4K.
