30 More Days of Movies: You’ve Got Mail

A lot of the classic Meg Ryan/ Tom Hanks movies are harder to find these days. I was going to order this from Amazon- but the cover was different than the cover of our vhs copy when I was a kid and it didn’t have the iconic “You’ve got Mail” screen- which is very nostalgic for me. Luckily my boyfriend found a dvd copy of this for 50 cents at the thrift store I think? Or maybe a library sale- either way now I own it which I am glad about because this is one I definitely will watch again.
So this is a cute movie about a girl trying to keep her small bookstore open when a big chain bookstore opens up right across the street. Kathleen- Meg Ryan is also talking to someone online and she has no idea who it is- but she is starting to fall for him. She doesn’t know it’s the CEO of this big retail store Joe Fox! Joe Fox is of corse played by Tom Hanks.
This is very cute, it’s very cozy and it is very much a New York love story- which I really like. I think the setting of this movie is very important because there are a lot of small businesses in New York that are incredibly charming- but they’re hard to keep open and big chain stores always pop up.
This movie is also very nostalgic for me- not just because of the early email sound- but because of the book store and all the books and plushies in the background are what I grew up with in bookstores-and in my home. The bookstore was so cozy and dreamy looking and I loved seeing it!
I thought the love story in the movie was very cute. It was a very sweet story in general and I loved the characters a lot. At the very end I did lose a little bit of interest after Kathleen decides what to do with the book store. It’s still a good movie and I totally recommend watching it if you can find it anywhere and you haven’t seen it in a while. This was my first time watching it.
Bye!
