30 More Days of Movies: You Again

After Diane Keaton's passing last month I wanted to watch some lighthearted comedies that I was pretty sure Diane Keaton was in. As it turns out- one was a somewhat lighthearted drama and only one movie had Diane Keaton in it. This is not the movie with Diane Keaton- but it does have Kristin Bell, Jamie Lee Curtis, Sigorny Weaver and Betty White. And a brief cameo from Cloris Leechman.

It starts off with Kristin Bell as a high school nerd that is bullied in particular by one girl. She ends up becoming very successful and she gets a big promotion that will be in New York City... but before she goes there- she needs to go to her Brother's Wedding! Her mom tells her that her brother's fiance went to high school with Kristin Bell and of course- it's the girl that bullied her in high school! And Jamie Lee Curtis- the mom of Kristin Bell and the Groom- meets the fiance's only family member- her aunt who is Sigourney Weaver- Jamie Lee Curtis's high school rival.

The movie is funny but I think it definitely lacks in character development. There aren't really any scenes of the rivals bonding until the very end of the movie- so when they become friends... it just doesn't really seem genuine or earned. It just doesn't feel like the family will remain close after this wedding. They could have showed a small flash forward too. I miss when movies like this existed but I feel like this is a sad example of why they don't exist anymore.

So of the 2 other movies I'm going to compare this to- this one is definitely the funniest. I don't think it's my favorite of the three but it is the one that's actually a laugh out loud comedy and a pretty good storyline. I don't think its the best movie- but I would recommend it and I'd probably watch it again.

Bye!
