30 More Days of Movies: Oz the Great and Powerful

Okay I don’t have a lot to say about this movie because I didn’t really like it that much. I didn’t really pay all that much attention to it either but… it’s a movie.
I don’t think this is the worst movie ever made- but I do think it’s the least interesting way to tell the story of The Wizard of Oz. It is essentially just a retelling of The Wizard of Oz with Oz as the Dorothy character instead of a real origin story for Oz. It has Oz Going to the magical land that I guess becomes Oz and he encounters similar friends the way that Dorothy encounters.
And… Oz isn’t a good character. He’s a magician, he’s a womanizer- and he’s not really a con artist the way he says in the movie… but he’s just a magician. He immediately hits on Mila Kunis’s character and then leaves her for Glinda who looks just like his ex girlfriend and that’s what turns Mila Kunis Wicked… along with some magic from her older sister.
So yeah I guess I thought the storyline with Mila Kunis was the most interesting part and I kind of think the way Oz defeated her was clever… but the movie wasn’t that interesting, nothing it did had any subtlety to it. It was just like “oh you know who a real wizard is Thomas Edison because of these things” and it makes sense for the time period… but at the same time they just kind of spell things out a little
too much.
I could see how people would like this movie- especially if you saw It when it was out or if it was something you grew up with but as someone that has a lot of nostalgia for The Wizard of Oz but no nostalgia for this… it was just a little boring and it was so incredibly long and it just didn’t need to be!
That’s everything- I hope you like this review!
Bye!
