30 More Days of Movies: Knowing

When I saw this movie on peacock I thought it was a completely different movie. I remember seeing trailers for an end of the world type of movie where women can’t have babies anymore and I was sure Nicholas Cage was the star of that movie- But that’s actually an Alfonso Curan movie starring Clive Owen- I think it’s called Children of Men. Anyway this is just a basic the end of the world is predicted and we have to figure out what to do movie… and it’s a little bit boring- but the end of the movie kind of made it worth watching.
So this movie stars Nicholas Cage as a single father with a recently deceased wife and a son who is deaf I believe- but can hear through a cochlear implant. There’s a time capsule ceremony at the son’s school where his class opens a letter from someone 50 years ago and most kids got a picture but Nicholas cage’s son got a list of numbers. He takes it home and shows it to his dad and his dad notices some patterns in the numbers. All the numbers correlate with a tragic event that’s happened and the number of people that died during that event. The numbers are almost at the very end and they’re thinking that the world is going to end soon because of it.
I don’t really think most of the movie is that interesting. The last 40 minutes of the movie kind of make up for the lackluster start to the movie. Nicholas Cage tracks down the daughter of the person that made the list and they both agree to go underground but then… they end up not agreeing on what to do and some crazy stuff happens at the very end… and I really ended up liking that part.
I think Nicholas Cage really makes this movie- there aren’t many scenes of him really “caging it up” there’s a few and I think that works. After watching City of Angels with him in it- I’ve appreciated him more in dramas especially. He’s really good at movies with emotional endings and I thought the ending of this movie was pretty emotional and it was perfect for him.
I also think the composer of this movie did a great job- a man named Marco Beltrami- who’s done a lot of movies… but I think this is maybe his best work. He was the composer of the Scream Movies and a lot of action movies at the time… but this one I thought was really really good. I actually sat and listened to the end credits of the movie- which I watched on streaming- just to hear the score.
So do I really think this movie is worth watching for those good parts alone… honestly it is good enough that I think it makes up for the boring stuff. And the boring stuff isn’t that bad- it’s just been done before. There were a lot of similar movies to this made around the same time and I think this one is a little bit deeper. There also is some symbolism in the movie that adds to the storytelling. Overall I just thought it was good.
So that’s everything! If you watch this movie or were thinking of watching it I hope this review is useful for you!
Bye!
