25 Days of Romance Movies: War of The Roses (1989)

Hello! Welcome to my first day of my next movie challenge: 25 Days of Romance movies! This one is kind of an anti romance… but it’s on my list nonetheless! War of The Roses starring Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner as Oliver and Barbara Rose- a couple who have fallen out of love with one another… but are still in love with their house and are fighting to try and keep the house. This movie was also directed by Danny Devito and he is a costar of the movie- playing Oliver’s friend and eventually his divorce lawyer.

I was interested in seeing this movie after seeing the remake from last year just called The Roses. I really like both versions of this story- although I have to say that in The Roses I could see both of them as good people who had just lost touch with each other and in this one… I kind of think Oliver isn’t the best… and for the most part I would say Barbara is in the right and he is in the wrong. But… spoilers she also made him eat his dog… sooo that’s a little bit less of a good thing she did… although he accidentally killed her cat first.

I like Danny Devito’s directing style- I think he does especially well with Dark Comedy’s because he makes them a little more funny than they are sad and I think this is one of his best movies. I think my favorite will always be Matilda- but this one is also really good!

So that’s Day 1 of my 25 Days of Romance! I was going to do all rom-coms… but I think there are some other romances I’d like to include with this. I might include horror, thriller and drama as well... so it might not be every movie is a great Valentine’s Day pick… but I think if you’re in a good relationship- seeing these types of movies on a Date Night is totally fine!
