So I was really looking forward to this one and technically it wasn’t released till 2026 in my area- but I’m going to count it in my 2025 movies because I think it was supposed to be released in the last weeks of 2025. No Other Choice is a Korean film starring Squid Game’s Lee Byung-hun. This is a dark comedy that explores the helplessness men feel after getting fired unexpedelty- and our main character Man- su has been working with this company for 25 years.
I LOVED this movie. 2025 has been the year of the GENUINELY FUNNY Dark comedies and this was no exception. I wasn’t expecting this to be as silly as it was but I had a small audience and everyone was laughing out loud.
Speaking of seeing this in a small audience I do want to talk about theater etiquette just a small bit and what to do in an awkward situation. So kind of near the beginning of the movie a woman that was seeing this movie alone left for a minute to go to the restroom. She came up to my boyfriend and I to ask what she missed. I think this was fine for this showing- there were just a few people in the audience and she didn’t ask particularly loudly. Plus there were english subtitles on the screen that everyone could read if they didn’t hear a part- which I doubt would happen because no one else was near us and she wasn’t that loud. The problem we had was that… the subtitles in this went kind of fast and it was at a point where I don’t think we fully knew what the guys plans were. So overall I think it was fine it’s just a bit of an awkward moment- and she seemingly enjoyed the rest of the movie so I guess our understanding of it was fine.
Anyway back to the movie… it kept me guessing. It was very well paced although it was kind of a long movie and everyone in it did a great job. Especially Lee Byung- hun. He was just as good at the silly moments as he was in the serious dramatic moments and he did a great job with some of the more physical humor in this movie.
This movie reminded me of David Lynch films because it showed how absurd mundane things really are. This was pretty much a long job interview and… it took a lot of really crazy turns and we saw
some characters go through very real situations in ways that were very funny.
Go see this one for sure- especially if you’re a fan of Lee Byung hun.
Bye!
