25 Days of Romance Movies: Valentine’s Day (2010)

Okay I’m going to be real with you guys… I thought “this is going to be the easiest movie challenge ever.” I love Rom Coms. There are tons I haven’t watched in years and tons I haven’t seen yet. On this particular day- I just did not feel like watching a Rom Com. And when i put this 2 hour anthology romance on I thought “this is by far the worst rom com to put on if you don’t want to watch a rom com” and… I still ended up kind of enjoying it.

So I wasn’t 100% paying attention to the movie BUT I think that’s the best way to watch it. Not every storyline in this movie is really worth giving any thought to. There are some that are sort of shaming women… but that’s not really the message of the movie. Let’s talk about the plots and relationships.

So my favorite story was between Shirley McClaine and Hector Alonso. They’re the oldest couple in the story and they’ve been married for several years and they mention that they’ve only been with each other and Hector Alonso finds out that that’s not the case. His wife has been with someone else and he’s upset

about that and has to learn to accept it.

While he’s accepting it- he meets Topher Grace who’s been dating someone-Ann Hathaway- for three weeks and it’s going well but he didn’t realize that after they first slept together it was right before Valentine’s Day and he didn’t know how to spend it together. Meanwhile she’s been acting weird because she has a second job working as a sexy phone entertainer- so he has to accept that.

There are some high school couples in this too. One is Taylor Swift and Taylor Lautner who are both hilarious in this movie. The chemistry between them is crazy too- they’re the cutest part of the movie. They don’t really have a storyline besides being young and in love- but that’s a sweet thing to see.

The other high school couple is Emma Robert’s and her boyfriend (idk who plays him) who are planning on losing it to each other on their lunch break from school. She tells every adult she can this… and then her mom comes home while he’s in her room without clothes and with a guitar… and it ends up getting ruined and they decide to wait and that planning it makes it less special. I think there’s too much pressure on kids who are losing it and I think it’s weird… especially for girls because there are double standards. This didn’t really focus on the girl losing it being the bad part and the movie is mostly sex positive… so this part is kind of hard to watch but I’m not sure they actually meant any harm by it.

Moving on… we have Eric Dane who’s barely in the movie and you know I love Eric Dane so that’s kind of upsetting. He plays a sports player-I’m guessing football I forget and he has some sort of big announcement about his career. A lot of people think he’s going to retire… but he’s not. Think more Heated Rivalry… I think he also rejects a big offer for another team too.

His agent is played by Jessica Biel and she’s just kind of a crazy lady that has an anti valentine’s day party but she ends up falling for Jamie Foxx who is a reporter interviewing Eric Dane and trying to get the story about him.

I guess the main couple of the movie is Ashton Kutcher and Jennifer Garner. Garner is dating a guy and it’s going really well and Ashton Kutcher is a florist and her best friend. The guy that she’s dating goes to him to send flowers- one to Jennifer Garner and another to his wife who Jennifer Garner doesn’t know about. She flies out to see him- Ashton Kutcher tries to tell her not to- but she just thinks he’s jealous.

Ashton Kutcher on the other hand proposes to his girlfriend and she accepts… but then later packs up all her things and tells him she can’t do this.

There’s also a young boy trying to send flowers to Jennifer Garner who’s his teacher but she tells him to ask his friend instead and that’s cute. He’s also the grandson of the older couple and Emma Roberts is his babysitter.

There’s also a scene where Julia Robert’s and Bradley Cooper sit next to each other on a plane… and she’s in an army uniform and her and Bradley Cooper are sort of flirty and he says she’s visiting a very lucky guy… and it turns out she’s visiting her son- the young boy (I think). And Bradley Cooper goes home to his love… Eric Dane.

This movie goes by quickly… I think it’s a good watch around Valentine’s Day. I also like Gary Marshall and would love to watch all of his movies. I think if you’re a Swiftie and you haven’t seen this movie yet- it’s worth watching just for the Taylor Swift parts. She’s so funny and her and Taylor Lautner were very cute together and I’m glad they have this movie to remember it by since they are both still friends.

Okay that’s everything. I might switch genres a little bit for the next movie… We’ll see.

Bye!

-Shannon
