25 Days of Christmas Movies: Muppets and Magoo!

Alright so for today’s movies I watched Mr. Magoo’s Christmas Carol, Muppets Christmas Carol and A Very Merry Muppet Christmas Movie! I’ve seen all these before- Muppets and Mr. Magoo I’ve seen at least 30 times I’d say… I’ll probably watch them again this year… but I love them so I have to talk about them!

Mr. Magoo’s Christmas Carol

So this I think was actually the first Christmas Special made for kids- it was out before the Rankin Bass Christmas movies. And this was always my mom’s favorite growing up- she watched it at her grandparents house with her grandma’s cookies in a nice spot by the radiator that was nice and warm- and they had a color TV before most people did… so she loved it!

I really love the songs in this more than any other Christmas carol I think- and I love the storytelling element of this movie. It’s us watching Mr. Magoo playing Scrooge in a Broadway production of A Christmas Carol… and it must have been an expensive production. They had to hold the curtain for 30 minutes because Mr. Magoo was late, they had elaborate sets and special effects, and songs and lots of characters… plus it seems to have only ran for one night because the set was destroyed by Mr. Magoo during the Curtain Call. Also Brady- the director’s medical bills must have added to the cost of the production…

My favorite part of this movie is the song that the Seamstress, the Laundress and the Undertaker sing about how they’re no good… cracks me up every time. I’m also impressed by the animation of this movie and I love that they switch up the order of the ghosts. They start with Christmas Present and then go with Christmas Past and then future.

While I don’t think I paid the most attention during this viewing- I did really like the movie overall and I’ll probably watch it again soon!

Muppets Christmas Carol

This one is my favorite Christmas Carol and it was ever since I was little. I’m a huge fan of The Muppets- especially in this movie in particular. I love Gonzo as Charles Dickens, I love Rizzo the Rat as his side kick… and I really love Michael Caine as Scrooge. He would be a great Scrooge in any Christmas Carol- but I loved how he acted with the muppets. He took the job very seriously and I think that made it so much better.

The songs in this movie are really good… I have 3 copies of this on physical media, I have the regular version, the Blu Ray and the dvd version with the extended edition that features the song When Love is Gone… which is the way I prefer watching it. There’s a reprise of the song at the end of the movie… and that doesn’t make sense without the song When Love is Gone.

A Very Merry Muppet Christmas Movie

Okay this one I remember seeing as a child and it’s not as fun as I remember it from when I was little. It’s essentially just It’s a Wonderful Life but with the muppets- but it has a very early 2000s sense of humor. Tons of celebrity cameos, and some more crude humor that you don’t really see in things today- especially from The Muppets. This was on NBC- so this was before Disney owned the muppets.

This movie I think is okay. It’s still a muppet movie so it isn’t bad- but it just isn’t really my preferred muppet movie. This is one of the only non Disney muppet movies that I grew up with and watched multiple times. We recorded this on VHS back in the day so I did watch it a few times from that recording-

But not nearly as much as the other 2 movies I’ve mentioned on this list. I remember buying the dvd and being a little bit disappointed in it when I watched it last year… and that’s the same this year. I did really like NBC in the 2000’s so it had that going for it but it just isn’t my favorite.

David Arquette and Joan Cusak do well in this movie acting with the Muppets- but that didn’t really save the plot of the movie for me… and I’m not sure they compare to Michael Caine and Tim Curry.

So that is everything for today’s Christmas movies! I hope you guys like this post!

Bye!
