Is Superstition by Stevie Wonder the Greatest song of All Time?

Hey everyone- welcome to my second installment of Is ____ the greatest song of all time? This week we're looking at a favorite of my moms and one that I actually grew up listening to: Superstition by Stevie wonder! Not my favorite song by Stevie Wonder but... I feel like this one is underrated. I feel like Songs in The Key of Life gets more recognition than most Stevie songs or albums these days... so I don't think this is as popular as it used to be... but I still think it is a great candidate for The GOAT song.

Why I Like it:

This is a song I remember hearing as a kid... and one thing I think is important is remembering the first time you hear a song. I forget if I asked my mom who Stevie Wonder was because they mentioned him on Kenan and Kel or if I heard Raven Simone sing it on Disney Channel for the Haunted Mansion movie... I think it was Kenan and Kel but I really started to like it after hearing it on Disney Channel.

And as far as like Soul music or Motown music... this is probably my favorites. I feel like John Baptiste could be up there too... but this is probably the best song of its kind.

I also love any spooky song... and especially with spooky season coming up so soon... this is a good one.

I remember one time I was in the car with my friend and she wanted to listen to Motown or something and I put this song on and It was perfect! We listened to it a second time and some guy waiting at a bus stop said "yes! I love your choice of music" and that was just awesome. It is a really good song and I feel like anyone that listens to it can just be happy.

Why others like it?

I think for the reasons I just said. The guy at the bus stop liked it so much he let us know! I mean that's a pretty powerful song right there if it has an impact like that.

Also I always think of the Office episode where Michael grills his foot- and he asks "what if Stevie Wonder was here? Would you treat him the same way." And Phyllis just says "ohh no. We love Stevie." And yeah. That's 100% true. I feel like everyone loves Stevie. He's amazing.

Ranking:

I'm a little conflicted here. Because you cannot deny the impact that Stevie Wonder has on people. Everyone knows who he is. Everyone loves this song. If someone didn't like this song... I don't think I'd want to be their friend. That being said... the lyrics are more repetitive than our first song in my opinion at least... so Ziggy might be a better song overall.

But on the other hand... I think this song deserves more recognition. Keenan and Kel were right! Let's listen to this song every Friday the 13th and every year at your Halloween party! This could totally be the best song of all time... but... I'm still going to rank it second right now. There may be a Stevie Wonder song that ranks higher than my beloved Ziggy Stardust... but I don't think it's this one. Not today at least.

So the official unofficial list of the Graatest songs of all time:

  1. Ziggy Stardust by David Bowie

  2. Superstitious by Stevie Wonder

I was going to do these posts weekly... but this is kind of a fun thing to do a few days in a row. So I may do these more often now and then as the list grows a little maybe I'll do it less frequently.

Bye!

-Shannon
