Today I've got another cute teen comedy and my first queer movie of the challenge: Love, Simon. I saw this in theaters, got the dvd when it was on sale at Target and then I didn't watch it... even though I missed a big part of the movie when I went to the bathroom. This movie honestly doesn't have a good moment to go to the bathroom at- there is a lot that happens in this movie and none of it is super important... but there are a lot of really good scenes that you kind of miss something during... so this is a good one to watch at home for sure.
This movie is about Simon, a gay high school student who knows that he's gay but at the beginning of the movie has not come out to anyone yet. His friends let him know that someone's posted on this anonymous blog that they have at their school confessing that they're gay and no one knows it yet... and when Simon sees that- he emails the person that posted it anonymously and lets them know that he is also gay. The two keep emailing each other back and forth and they don't know who the other one is- but they're still catching feelings for each other... and I think they both finally feel seen for the first time.
Simon is in this friend group with Nick, Leah, and a new girl named Abby who is played by a young Alexandra Shipp who you might recognize from yesterday's movie - Anyone But You. Nick likes Abby and Leah likes Simon. Abby and Simon are in the play together with a weird kid named Martin who also likes Abby and he ends up finding out that Simon has been messaging someone about being gay. Martin blackmails Simon and threatens to leak his emails if he doesn't help him date Abby.
Martin does end up asking Abby out and she rejects him in front of the whole school- so Martin leaks Simon's emails so that everyone will focus on Simon instead of him... and that's the scene where I went to the bathroom.
Overall I just love this movie. The characters are all really memorable- it's very funny overall and it has a very sweet ending. I love a teen romance comedy and this one was really good. There are also some great performances not only from the teen cast of this movie- but also Jennifer Garner and Josh Duhmel, who play Simon's parents. Cute movie- definitely recommend for anyone looking for a good teen rom com.
Bye!
