Ella McKay was probably one of the worst reviewed movies of 2025… but was it that bad of a movie?? Yes- kind of.
For context: I saw this movie in an Empty theater on Christmas Eve at 9am… so my boyfriend and I talked through the whole movie and commented about how bad it was. If you’re lucky enough to see this movie like that… it’s very worth seeing. If you aren’t… I don’t think it’s worth it.
The real crime of this movie was sort of the pacing or the editing of the movie… there are so many moments when they mention something that they haven’t introduced yet- or they do a flashback in the movie without really explaining that. There’s a lot of weird moments that they could have probably cut or made shorter that were left in the movie.
My boyfriend also thought it was written by AI- but it didn’t feel exactly like AI to me… it did however feel like they just used a random inspirational quote generator and just inserted them into random spots of the movie. I actually looked at a website for random inspirational quotes and it did seem like they used the same formula. And then we kept spotting it in different parts of the movie.
I also heard people say that no one in this movie did anything a normal human would do and they compared it to Madame Webb in that way… I think this was a better movie than Madame Webb but that’s a good comparison. No one really acted human… and there were parts that were kind of crazy. Ella McKay’s marriage I think was the craziest part of it… I don’t think Ella McKay would have ever married someone like her husband to begin with… and I think someone would have warned her against it.
My favorite part of the movie was the narration from Julie Kavner- aka Marge Simpson. She was really good although she didn’t really make the movie any better. I enjoyed her scenes a lot.
I also should mention that this movie somewhat takes place in 2008 during the recession and it takes place in State. You might be asking Which state does it take place in… one of them. Doesn’t really specify. They filmed the movie in Rhode Island and it looked like the license plates said New Hampshire on it…but they never really say the name of the State- which is funny because it’s basically all about state politics.
So yeah- that was my Very Ella McKay christmas. I hope you guys like it!
Bye!
