Okay so Companion released on Friday- I saw the Scream Unseen preview of it which was awesome and I would totally do another screen unseen or scream unseen… but I am so obsessed with this movie and I feel like I can talk about it now so let’s talk about it!
Okay so this movie follows Iris played by the very lovely Sophie Thatcher who was in Heretic and as some other theater goers at my screening noticed- she was also in The Book of Boba Fett… she plays this beautiful young lady who is incredibly devoted to her handsome- yet- average in every aspect of the word boyfriend Josh played by the adorable rom com nepo baby Jack Quaid. Where things go a bit haywire is that Josh and his friend Kat, who is a bit of a mean girl to Iris have a plan to kill Kat’s wealthy boyfriend and split his money. But they don’t do it themselves- they program Iris to do it because she’s a robot.
Iris mentions in the trailer that the 2 times she felt alive (not a direct quote but something along those lines) were the day she met Josh and the day she killed him… this is a trope in Rom Coms a lot where they’ll say the ending of the movie at the beginning… and I really liked the way that they use it in this movie. At the beginning there’s a bit of a naivety to the quote because she’s just so full of love for this wonderful man she met at the grocery store of all places… and at the end we see how much she’s grown and how much she’s learned and how free she is from this man… it’s really a beautiful ending scene.
It’s also… not much of a spoiler in the beginning because… the audience know that Josh and Kat’s plan can’t really work. Both of them are idiots… and they program a robot to be especially violent and dangerous… so Iris has the upper hand right from the get go. Sure- she can’t lie… but she has the device that controls her… so she’s kind of unstoppable.
I loved that it doesn’t really matter what Iris’s intelligence is- she is still smarter than Josh and… she has emotional intelligence which Josh has none of whatsoever.
I have some feminist rage right now as I’m sure a lot of women do right now but… this movie definitely helped deal with my emotions and I felt validated. No man has control over me… And I am definitely an over- apologizer and I know people take advantage of me because of it… so this made me feel seen.
Overall… yeah I love this movie and I totally recommend it. I feel like my favorite movie genres are horror, horror comedy, rom coms and comedy… so this was perfect for me… and I really liked the characters. I also think I like girl robot movies a lot.
Okay that is everything in my second spoiler review of this!
Update: I think I said this movie was the same director as Barbarian- it is not. I think this is the guys first big movie- but they mention Barbarian in the trailer so I thought it was the same director. I forget if I mentioned that in this review or the last one but I’ve talked about it in real life enough that I thought I should correct myself here.
Bye!
