This is the movie I was actually the least excited to watch of the year and I think it was the movie that I understood the least about... so that definitely biased my opinion going into this movie- but after watching it I can say I enjoyed aspects of it.
This is a film directed by Luca Guadagnino who is a popular director that I have yet to see a movie I actually enjoy from him. I think this movie is my favorite so far despite the pretty bad reviews it got. Which I can understand- but this movie was just very interesting to me and the performances were amazing and once again the Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross score was a 10 out of 10... totally made the movie for me. I will admit- I watched the end of this movie the day after watching the first part and I didn't really like the music as much the next morning- but I still think they did a great job and it added to the movie. I would compare the way their scores fit movies to the way Angelo Badlementi's scores fit the works of David Lynch.
The movie itself is sort of a he said/ she said movie but we see it through the eyes of a third party. I thought it was going to be about the Brock Turner situation- but it was a lot different than that. It was about a student who is hanging out with professors and going to parties at one of her professor's houses and she accuses another professor of assaulting her. She says that he asked her personal questions and starts kissing her on her bed. And he gets fired because of the accusations and it seems that the allegations were not exactly true.
When I saw the trailer for this movie I didn't like the idea of "oh this is so hard for a woman that is sticking up for a man accused of assault" but the movie itself isn't quite like that. Alma as a character is very layered character and all of these characters fascinate me- but I would say mainly Alma is the interesting part of this movie and I think they needed to develop the other characters a little bit better. Like I saw this movie days ago and my boyfriend and I are still thinking about these characters and talking about them. I don't think that Andrew Garfield's character and Ayo Edebiri's characters are in this movie enough and that is kind of what's missing from this movie. I think they do a great job but they both aren't developed so the audience really has no way of knowing if the actual truth of what happened in this movie.
I can see why people dislike this movie so much... but I can't say that I did- I think it was a really unexpected movie for me to like it as much as I did and my boyfriend and I have definitely thought about watching it again- possibly alongside other Luca Guadagino films and discussing it further. This is kind of a deeper movie and a hard one to watch or recommend... but it is for sure worth it for the performances alone.
Tomorrow I will have a much lighter movie:Zootopia 2!
Bye!
